What is Deep Tissue Massage?

There are many different types of massage, and deep tissue is one of the most commonly recognized, at least by name. But what’s actually involved in a deep tissue massage? And does a deep tissue massage hurt?

Deep tissue massage treats musculoskeletal issues by applying pressure in slow, deep strokes. The slower deeper pressure targets the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissue to help treat areas of chronic tension or pain.

Benefits of deep tissue massage

As with most types of massage, deep tissue massage helps reduce tension in the body. It can also increase blood flow to promote faster healing and reduce inflammation in the body. When it comes to sports injuries and even some repetitive stress injuries, deep tissue massage can help break up scar tissue on the muscles and in connective tissue.

What to expect during a deep tissue massage

Your massage therapist will first warm up your muscles with some lighter strokes before they begin applying more pressure. Then they’ll use deeper kneading techniques to work your muscles and target any specific areas of soreness or tension. They may use their fingers, hands, and even elbows to apply pressure to your body during the massage.

The amount of pressure can vary significantly in a deep tissue massage, so be sure to communicate with your massage therapist if you would like more or less pressure in a particular area. You may also feel a little bit sore for a day or two following a deep tissue massage. Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after to help muscles hydrate and recover faster.

When to avoid deep tissue massage

The level of pressure involved in a deep tissue massage isn’t right for everyone. If you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, are taking blood thinners, have osteoporosis, are pregnant, or are undergoing chemotherapy, deep tissue massage is not recommended. Gentler forms of massage, such as Swedish massage, are a better option for these specific groups.
