Caring for Your Spirit

We are all more than just our bodies and our minds; we are a part of something much bigger. The part of us that connects to each other, to the world, to something higher than ourselves is our spirit. Caring for your spirit is an essential part of your overall wellness, but sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint what exactly that entails.

The truth is, the journey to a healthy spirit can look different for every person. It may even look different for you from day to day. The good news is there are a few key areas where you can start working on nourishing this part of yourself. Spirituality is all about connection and reflection, and any pursuit that brings those things can help care for your spirit.

Connecting with a higher power

However you define it, being a part of something larger than yourself is the very essence of caring for your spirit. Connecting with a higher power — God, universe, love, whatever moves you — empowers many people’s spirits. You may experience that connection while doing one of the other things on this list, but if none of them seem right for you, spend time reflecting on the ways you might best find meaning that impacts your soul.

Engaging in community

For many, spiritual care is found in connection to a faith community or in fellowship with those who have similar beliefs or values. Whether it is a gathering after a church service, a social event in your neighborhood or workplace, or a volunteer opportunity with a cause that’s important to you, being with others can rejuvenate your spirit.

Experiencing nature

Time in nature can be a grounding and healing force in life. Connection to the earth and the natural world can come through time spent outdoors, pursuits dedicated to taking care of the earth, and immersing yourself in the natural world. Consider taking a hike, watching a sunrise, or sitting outside with your coffee and listening to the birds chirping a morning greeting. Even just standing outside barefoot in the grass for a few minutes a day can help your spirit.

Meditating or reflecting

In a fast-paced world that values how busy we are, meditating and reflecting on life is a valuable tool that all too often gets lost in the shuffle. Reflection can be in the form of meditation, quiet time, journaling, or spending time contemplating life. As you look inward, take time to think and breathe.

Building friendships through quality time

Friendship and companionship are a balm for the soul. Identify those who inspire you, are always there for you, and care for you most deeply. Make sure to spend time with those you love on a deeper level on a regular basis.

On your journey toward wellness, remember that all three facets of the self — mind, body, and spirit — are equally important. At various times, you may find one aspect of life demanding more attention than others, but the three are interconnected always. Caring for one of the three can spill over into the other two, so be sure to identify some ways to care for your mind, body, and spirit to support a healthier you.
