Massage and Pregnancy
Often, pregnant women ask if massage is safe during pregnancy. We want to claim it loud and clear: not only is it safe (with a few precautions) but there are also many benefits to massage during and after pregnancy. Massage can offer relief from both pain and stress relief during the entire perinatal period.
Why massage during and after pregnancy?
Massage is a wonderful way to relieve tension in the body. During and after pregnancy, massage relieves lower back and leg pain, improves sleep, and helps to regulate hormones. It can lower stress hormones while increasing serotonin and dopamine and improve your feelings of well-being.
Massage after you have given birth can aid the body’s recovery by relaxing muscles and balancing hormones. Massage can even help relieve anxiety. While massage cannot cure postnatal depression, the effect on hormones and the act of self-care can improve mood and support overall emotional health. The right time to resume massages after birth is up to the mother, but massage in the days after labor can help relieve sore muscles from the labor process.
What should I know about massage during pregnancy?
The American Pregnancy Association says that massage is safe to begin at any point during pregnancy. That said, some therapists and some mothers-to-be prefer to wait until after the first trimester. As always, consult with your doctor for specific recommendations about perinatal massage.
Look for a massage therapist who is trained or experienced in prenatal and postnatal massage and knows what pressure points to avoid and how to best care for a pregnant body.
How should I get comfortable on the massage table?
For the safest, most comfortable massage, lie on your side and use a variety of pillows to support your body. Some massage tables have a hole for a pregnant belly; however, those can contribute to stretched ligaments. Supporting your belly is a better option, and the Resonance team can help ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout your massage.
What if I need to use the restroom?
We understand that pregnancy is a time of frequent bathroom breaks. At Resonance, our rooms are all stocked with robes. Your massage therapist is happy to pause while you step out to the bathroom if needed.
Can massage induce labor?
There are some pressure points on the body that are tied to childbirth in some traditions. Massage therapists trained in prenatal massage can avoid these pressure points, unless you are full term and labor is your goal!
The Resonance team would love to help you reduce stress and tension in the body during and after your pregnancy, so be sure to let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns. We’re here to help!
